Gautier Capuçon
Gautier Capuçon is a true ambassador of the cello today. Each season he performs with the world’s most renowned conductors and instrumentalists. Continuing the work of the Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle he created at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2014, he has extended his commitment to young artists by establishing his own foundation to help young musicians begin their careers. The Gautier Capuçon Foundation now counts 36 laureates. Gautier Capuçon is widely recognized for his deeply expressive musicality, his virtuosity and the rich sound of his 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello, “L’Ambassadeur.”
During the summer of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, Gautier Capuçon launched the tour Un été en France, a musical journey that enabled families across the country to attend live concerts. To date, the initiative has gathered more than 145,000 spectators, presented 80 concerts in 66 towns and villages, and showcased 69 emerging artists alongside him. Five documentaries have already been devoted to the tour, and a new one was broadcast between Christmas and New Year 2025.
In January 2021, Gautier Capuçon was promoted to the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur.
Born in 1981 in Chambéry, Gautier Capuçon began studying the cello at the age of five with Augustin Lefèbvre and later studied in Paris with Annie Cochet-Zakine and Philippe Muller, before continuing his training in Vienna with Heinrich Schiff. He has received several first prizes in international competitions, including the First Grand Prize at the André Navarra International Competition in Toulouse.
