Marina Viotti

From metal to baroque. Marina Viotti, the “Gothic Callas” revealed to the world during the Paris Olympics, the first woman to win a Grammy Award in the “metal” category AND “lyrical artist of the year” at the Victoires, builds a bridge between these two arts. From Dowland to Metallica, via Björk and Nine Inch Nails, she recounts her personal battle with illness, a journey from darkness to light. With her sultry voice, rock energy and operatic virtuosity, the Franco-Swiss mezzo-soprano, who is in high demand at La Scala and the Paris Opera, reveals her most authentic self here.

Marina Viotti

Marina Viotti, whose career has been rapidly rising in recent years, was born into a family of musicians. After studying literature and marketing, she first flourished as a singer in a metal band before returning to classical singing. Refusing to turn her back on her metal background, Marina works to build bridges between metal and classical music. In 2025 she became the first woman to win a Grammy in the category Best Metal Performance and was also named Opera Artist of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Classique 2023.

This striking contrast was also seen during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she performed in a duet with the metal band Gojira—an emblem of what makes Marina Viotti unique: reaching the highest level in different yet complementary musical worlds.

Named “Best Singer of the Year” at the International Opera Awards, described as an “eclectic diva” by Paris Match and even as the “gothic Callas” by L’Obs, Marina Viotti is the whirlwind the classical world needed. Constantly seeking new collaborations and open to experimentation, her artistic journey has taken her to metal and jazz stages and even to a classical/rap battle.

Her vocal qualities have made her a mezzo-soprano sought after by the world’s leading opera houses, from the Opéra national de Paris to the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Her latest album Melankhôlia, In Darkness Through The Light traces a musical journey from the works of John Dowland to songs by Lana Del Rey, Metallica, U2 and Björk—an entire universe.
